National Park – Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama

In 1999 the 40.000 hectare area around La Maroma, the highest mountain in the region of Malaga, was declared as a National Park, and since then 70.000 people visit this special and beautiful park every year.
The park is a natural boundary between the Malaga and Granada region. On the Malaga side you find following villages: Canillas de Albaida, Competa, Frigiliana, Nerja, Salares and Sedella. The villages around the National Park in the Granada region are: Alhama de Granada, Arenas del Rey, Jayena and Otivar.
The area invites to hiking on different levels and there a routes of different length. From the local tourist offices you can get maps or order guided tours.
There are many different species in the park, and you can explore mountain goats, squirrels, owls and many types of bird species.
The vegetation is different depending on which time a year you visit the park, but always beautiful.
